I have been a consultant for CAbi for 5 years. I love what I do because of the women that I have met and the friendships that I have gained. Some of my closest friends are my fellow consultants.

In addition to CAbi, I have been on the support staff of Team Women Corporate for 3 years. Between the two positions and my first grandbaby that arrived last year, I keep very busy.

“Be unfashionably early,” to any networking event suggests Leil Lowndes, author of How To Instantly Connect With Anyone. This works because it’s easier to connect with someone to start a conversation when there are few people who are all eager to connect. Once networking gets well underway, you often find yourself trying hard to break into a closed circle or group that is already deep in a conversation you missed the start of. And, if you’re shy, connecting in a smaller group first will be more comfortable than walking into a crowded room. Outgoing? Then meet a few people early and make it your mission to introduce them around as other people you know arrive. They’ll both thank you for it!

Be a Connector

Making positive connections for others is a fantastic and easy way to strengthen your network. Do you know two people who have the same hobby, work in the same industry, have similar goals, or are both attending the same conference? Simply introduce them to each other, in person or via email and let them take it from there. Some of those connections may not develop further, but some will, and those individuals will be thankful you thought to introduce. If you’re not sure someone wants to be introduced, it’s OK to ask. A simple, “I have another friend who runs 5Ks. Would you like to be introduced sometime?” Even if now isn’t right for them, they’ll appreciate the thought.

Ask Great Questions

Do you ask great questions when you meet other business owners who might be a good referral source or potential customer? Ask about their past, present, and future. This shows you’re interested in them and their journey, not just “what you can do for me today.” It also helps you problem-solve and brainstorm together, especially as you focus on the “future goals” questions. Some great ones to ask:

How did you get started in your business or industry? What appealed to you about it?
What are you most proud of in your business right now? Can you give me an example of a recent client you helped, where you felt proud or accomplished? What is the biggest challenge you’re facing in your business?
If you could achieve only one new business goal this year, what would you want it to be? What gets you excited about reaching that goal? What is standing in your way of reaching your goal?

As you talk, be prepared to share your own candid answers. Be open, listen well, and seek common ground. Commit to taking steps to helping each other when you find it. (And note what great questions these would be when meeting one-on-one with other members in your chapter!)

Email is fast and easy, but it inundates many of us. Rather than shooting off yet another email to someone you’re networking with, try picking up the phone, scheduling a lunch, or asking to connect via Skype. More personal connections build relationships faster and deeper. Within your chapter, make time to connect with other members “live” outside of meetings one-on-one to explore how you can support each other more fully.
